I am researching Solomon Jackson and find it hard to believe that a Rev. War Vet who lived here in the early to mid 1800's has little information available concerning him or his family(sons Jesse,James, daug. Sarah). Anyone got any ideas?

I have just read Bob Scott's excellent workshop about children being named for famous people. For years I have unsuccessfully looked for a namesake for my ancestor; perhaps one of you has an idea. His name: Paulis/Paulus Stewart/Steward Lockridge, b. 1815 in Jefferson Co IN, family moved there from KY. Parents and siblings all have the traditional family names: William, Sarah, John, Samuel, George, Elizabeth, etc. He was the second son, so they hadn't run out of familiar names yet. What do you think? Thanks ~ Gayle

Does anyone have any information on Levi C. McKINNEY, born ca. 1826 in Estill County, KY?
Levi's middle name is believed to be Curtis.
Levi married Elizabeth EASTES, believed to be ESTES, on Dec. 19, 1848 in Estill County, KY.
Elizabeth died prior to July 1887.
Levi mentions in his Mexican War pension file that he has lived in Jefferson County, IN.
Levi's 2nd wife was Mary BLACK(she was previously married), married June 4, 1889 in Louisville, Jefferson, KY.
Levi is indicated to have died on July 13, 1889.
If anyone is researching, is descended from, or has any further information on the line of Levi C. McKINNEY, his spouses, and/or his descendants, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Debbie

This is in response to a question from Virginia about my previous entry.
Dear Virginia: I sympathize with you, since I've already encountered scores of McLaughlins in my searches. My most valuable source was a letter written to me by my great-grandmother shortly before my birth, so I knew where to look for the family, their birth and death dates. She also listed the names with middle initials of all of her siblings. So I had a lot of information to begin with. I've been connected to the web for only three months, so I've had to learn a lot about on-line genealogy along the way. You, like me, should be prepared for a variety of spellings in the family name, quite aside from the kind of error I described in my original entry. (I don't mean to sound condescending, but I don't know how long you've been at this. Forgive me if I tell you what is already obvious.) As for other sources, Myindianahome.net has been invaluable, especially the cemetery, death and marriage lists. More recently I began to use the LDS Familysearch.org, but that has to be used with some care. And, I have made extensive use of census-online.com, although not for Jefferson Co. In the present instance, the role of sheer luck played an immense role. Using the 1880 census on the LDS site, I had identified some of Fountain's adult children (with misspelled last names -- the importance of middle initials very important here) and their households. Then I decided to see who their neighbors were, using the "Previous/Next Household" option to browse the census. Since they were all living in the same immediate area, I soon found the uncommon pairing of names Fountain & Winnifred, checked the names of the children against my letter, and Eureka! Then, not knowing whether "Knight" was correct or not, I looked in the Jefferson Co. list of marriages for someone named Knight who got married some time after 1860 and discovered John married Susan R. Johnson (misspelled). Since their child Charles was living with his grandparents, I wondered whether John Knight might have gone off in the Civil War, so I checked the Jefferson Co. list of soldiers, found John Knights [sic] in the 6th Ind Inf, and checked that information against the National Park Service's Civil War Soldiers and Sailors list (www.itd.nps.gov/cwss), and there he was. Then I went one more step and looked at the Jefferson Co. marriage list again to see whether a Susan (R.) Knight might have remarried, and found that she married a man named McLain in 1867. And that's where it stands now. I know from working on another line, that it was not unheard of for a young widow, upon remarrying, to leave a male child from the first marriage with relatives. I don't know how helpful any of this is, but I wish you the best of luck in your search, especially for the widow and her children, since all too often census indexes list only "Heads of Households," and she may well have been living with another relative.

I'm interested in the Harriett Dyer who is mentioned in Jefferson County Apprenticeship Records: "DYER, Harriett W. (H-467) Oct. 7, 1833. Whose mother is dead and father denied said child, now 4 yrs 6 mos to David Sutton until 18 yrs of age." This child may have been illegitimate, and Dyer may have been her mother's maiden name.
I believe this may be my long-sought Harriet M. Dyer, born in Louisiana 1828/29, who married Sherod J. Pittman in 1848 in Bartholomew County. According to the 1880 census of Jefferson County, Harriet's father was born in Ohio and her mother in New York.
Please contact me if you have any further information on the Harriett Dyer who was apprenticed to David Sutton. For example, did she appear again in the record when her apprenticeship ended (1847)? Did she marry?

BRINKER, BURCH, CRUSICK, CUSICK and WRIGHTHOUSE
Morgan Brinker married Ruanna (Rowana) Crusick (Cusick) on 13 April 1843 in Decatur County, Indiana.
They had the following children: Lidia A., Francis A., James M. in the 1850 Jackson Township, Decatur County, Indiana Census.
By 1860, Ruanna was living in the household of John W. and Catherine Decker in Saluda Township, Jefferson County, Indiana with daughter Mary M. and two additional Brinker children Hulda and William H.. (I've later identified Hulda and William H. as the children of Morgan Brinker also).
William was listed as 2 years of age in the 1860 Census taken on 15 June 1860. To me, this means that Ruanna either divorced (if there were divorced back then) Morgan or he died sometime around 1857-1858.
By 29 September 1860, Ruanna (Rowana) had married a John Burch in Jefferson County, Indiana.
Anyone with additional information on this line, please contact me at genseeker0@lycos.com

Note: Dennis McDermid - Dies by fire at calaboose in Hannibal, Missouri. buried at City Cemetery.
==================================================
A prisoner burns to death
Many stories about the calaboose have come down through the years by way of the newspapers of earlier times. In 1853, five newspapers existed in Hannibal, and all carried accounts of the death of Dennis McDermid by fire. Those newspaper stories varied according to the writer, but the Morning Journal of Jan. 27 printed the story which is most accurate according to the facts handed down to the descendants of Rev. John M. Johnson, a Baptist minister who knew McDermid best.
McDermid, a 40-year-old man, came to Missouri from Indiana in 1851 seeking employment. He found a job as a hired man at the home of Rev. John Moorman Johnson and his wife, Sally Kelly Johnson. Rev. Johnson was a Baptist minister, but he farmed extensively to support his large family. Their farm was about four miles south of Hannibal on the road now known as Route "O" on a site known as "High Point." McDermid also worked for Mrs. Johnson's sister, Mary and her husband, James Mills, who lived on the same road.
Both families regarded him as a "good hearted, clever, and honest man" according to the newspaper account. After about a year at the Johnsons, he decided to take a job as a laborer on the building of the New London to Hannibal plank road. The rate of pay was much higher. He left the Johnsons and lived with other road crew men.
For recreation the work crew came to Hannibal on Saturday nights to have a good time. On a Saturday night in January 1853 McDermid came to town with the work crew. It is probable that he was unaccustomed to liquor and he became intoxicated. In fact, he was so drunk he lost control of his actions. It was a very cold night and he tried to break into the house of a black family on North Street. He was arrested by Marshal Ben Hawkins and thrown into the calaboose.
It is not known how the building caught fire, probably from a fire built to heat his jail room, or maybe from his pipe. Marshal Hawkins had gone to his home, some distance away, but had left a key with someone close by. The presence of the fire became known in early morning as McDermid screamed for help.
Efforts to break into the calaboose to rescue him were futile, the person with the key wasn't located and McDermid perished in the fire.
Rev. Johnson claimed the remains and conducted a burial service at the old City Cemetery at the top of North Seventh Street. He wrote to McDermid's mother in Madison, Ind.

I'm researching an individual who's maiden name is Anna Wehner. She was married to John Davis and lived in the Madison City area for the rest of her life. She was born in Indiana but I do not know which county.
She was born in 1884/1885 and I have had no success finding the name of her parents. Her father was born in Germany and mother in Indiana, based upon data found in the 1920 census when she lived in Smyrna. They lived on a farm and had several daughters, one of which was Stella Rousch who worked in the Madison bank, and just passed away in the last couple of years. Anna Wehner passed away in 1968 in a Hannover nursing home.
Does anyone know anything about Anna Wehner and who her parents were? I would be very grateful for any information you could provide.

I am looking for information on members of the Higbee/Higby family who are found living in Republic twp. in Jefferson Co. In the 1850 Census an Isaac F. Higby (age 19, b. Ohio) and Anthony (his whole name is Anthony Wayne Higbee) Higby (age 17, b. Ohio) are living with the family of James Mann and his wife Eliza. In 1860 there is a death/burial for Walter Wayne M., a child of Isaac F. and Ailily Higbee. The burial is in Carmel Cemetery of the United Presbyterian Church where the Mann family is also buried. By 1860 Anthony Higbee has moved away and is living in Warren Co., IL with his wife, Melinda, son James (both of them born in IN), daughter Anna and son John (both born in IL). In 1880 Anthony (found as A.W. Higby), his second wife, Martha (they were married 1863 in IL) and their daughter Fanny are again living with James and Eliza Mann in Hanover, Jefferson Co., IN. Anthony is called James Mann's stepson. It appears that Eliza J. Mann is the mother of Anthony and Isaac Higbee. Apparently Anthony brought his family back to live with James and Eliza because they were getting old and probably needed help with the farm. Eliza died in 1881 and James in 1891. I would like to find out when and where Eliza married James Mann as his second wife, who her first husband was and any other information on their ancestry. Eliza's gravestone says she was of Orange Co., NY (b. ca. 1808). Were there other Higbee children or are Isaac and Anthony the only ones who were in Jefferson Co.? Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

Re: Mary Ann Barriger
Dear Distant Family Members:
My name is Wanda Shultz, and I am currently researching the Barriger/Barringer genealogy. I have accumulated vast amounts of family history. I am seeking help in locating pictures, and information regarding Mary Ann “Annie” Barriger White the first child of Francis 3rd marriage with Catherine Caley Gaylord Barriger born about 1895. Mary Ann “Annie” had married a Vincent or Vance White about the age of 14 in Trimble Co., KY and, lived in Madison, IN. Mary Ann was 18 at the time of Great Grandmother Catherine’s death.
How am I related to you?
My Grandmother was Clara Francis Barriger. Clara was the daughter of Francis M. Barriger and Catherine Caley Gaylord of Madison, IN. As well as, the youngest sister of Mary Ann.
Grandma Clara with Howard Gardner, Lillian “Lillie” Dell, James Rodgers, and Verna Mae “Vernie” were sent to the Soldier and Sailors home in Knightstown, IN after the death of Great Grandmother Catherine in 1913 of Tuberculosis. Great Grandfather Francis “Frank” M. Barriger had died in 1910 of heart issues. Great Uncle Frank was consider of age and did not go to the orphanage.
Clara Francis Barriger later was indentured to and then adopted by Warren and Emma Crum, of Ridgeville, IN. Grandma Clara seems to have contact with at least some of her brothers and sisters in her late teens and adult life, as I knew Great Aunt Lil and Great Uncle Frank as a child.
The Soldier’s and Sailor’s separated the children either through placement or discharge due to age, or in my case Grandma Clara adoption, giving me little opportunity to get to know my family.
Please contact me if you would be willing to help with information. I am looking only for help in the Barriger / Barringer Genealogy. I am one of the lost sheep of the family that had been separated so many years ago after 1913. I sincerely hope you can find it in your heart to help me. I am willing to share the Barriger Genealogy information I have accumulated with all.
Thank-you so much for your time. I look forward to hearing from you..
Warmest Regards,
Wanda Shultz
