Moses James Murphy, commonly known as Jimmy, was born on November 11, 1837, in Henry County, Indiana. He was the son of Jonathan Murphy & Nancy Downing, who were married on January 19, 1837, in Henry County, Indiana. The father was born in Virginia, and the mother in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. M. Chester Hoggatt stated that his great-grandfather, Jonathan Murphy, was a circuit rider preacher. Farming was also a part of Jonathan's life. By 1840, the Murphy family had moved to Clay County, Indiana. Per the History of Clay County, Elder Jonathan Murphy did the carpentry work for the Bee Ridge Church; his in-laws having worked with him. Nancy Downing-Murphy's parents were James and Susannah (Yocum) Downing. James & Susannah were married in Montgomery County, Kentucky on November 11, 1796.
By 1850, the Murphys had moved on to Waltz Township, in Wabash County. Jimmy Murphy married Amanda Cordelia Fordyce there on 28 Dec 1859. Their son William L. was born August 29, 1863. In 1865, Jimmy served with the 151st Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Amanda died sometime before January 7, 1868, as this was the day that Jimmy remarried to Nancy Ann Davis in Grant County, Indiana. They lived southwest of Swayzee, having nine children: Eliza Jane, Miles Nathan, David I., Catherine, Henry M., Martha Ann and Elmer; Joey & Stevie having died as children.
Jimmy died February 16, 1910, Grant County, Indiana at the age of 72. He was buried at the Thrailkill Cemetery in the same county.
