William L. Murphy

William L. Murphy, son of Moses James Murphy (Jimmy) and Amanda Cordelia Fordyce, was born on August 29, 1863, most likely in Wabash County, Indiana. His parents were born on November 11, 1837, in Henry County, Indiana; and 1842, respectively. They were married on December 28, 1856, in Wabash County and were of Irish descent.
In 1865, William's father enlisted in the 151st Regiment, Indiana Voluntary Infantry. William's mother died before January 7, 1868, as his father, on this day, remarried to Nancy Ann Davis, in Grant County, Indiana. William's boyhood years was spent on the Murphy farm, southwest of Swayzee, Indiana. He was seven years old when his half-sister Eliza Jane was born. After Eliza Jane, eight more children were born, viz, Miles Nathan, David I., Stevie, Joey, Catherine, Henry M., Martha Ann and Elmer. Stevie and Joey died as children.
On September 24, 1880, William married Tempa Louise Adams. She was born on December 04, 1862, in Howard County, Indiana. Their children were: Mrs. Nora Mae Van Devender, w/o Ira, February 26, 1884 - December 6, 1978; Mrs. Myrtle Cheesman, w/o John; Mrs. Charlotte Tolle, w/o Henry; Mrs. Maude Reeder, w/o C.M.; Zima Murphy; Earnest Murphy and Wayne Murphy.
Tempa died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Cheesman, on October 30, 1949, two miles southeast of Gaston. William died on March 31, 1953. Both were buried at the Thrailkill Cemetery, near Swayzee, Grant County, Indiana.

Tempa Murphy, Rites Held Wed.
Mrs. Tempa Louise Murphy, age 86, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Cheesman, two miles southeast of Gaston, at 2 p.m. Sunday. She had been ill for the past five weeks.
Funeral services were held at the funeral home in Swayzee, at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Rev. Fred Kinglake and Rev. William Wilson, both of Indianapolis, were in charge of the rites. Burial was in Thrailkill cemetery.
Mrs. Murphy was born in Howard county, but had lived for approximately 60 years in the Swayzee community. She had lived at Sims until the beginning of her illness, when she went to her daughter's home.
Survivors include her husband, William Murphy; four daughters, Mrs. Cheesman, Mrs. Ira Vandervender, Alexandria; Mrs. C. M. Reeder, Kokomo, and Mrs. Henry Tolle, Indianapolis; 14 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren, and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
