A brief geneology of the Hoyt's, or one branch of the family, who first settled in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The father of David Hoyt who it is supposed emigrated from England about the year 1640 moved from Litchfield, Conn. in the year 1680 and settled in Deerfield Mass. where he lived until March 1704 when the French and Indians burned the town and he and his son, named Jonathan, born in 1688, together with many others were taken captive. They were taken away into Canada, when after suffering every severity which the inclemency of the weather and the cruelty of the savages imposed upon them, the father died, but Jonathan returned to Deerfield, and settled upon the old farm, where he lived until 1776, at which time he died, leaving two sons named David and Jonathan, both of whom settled in Deerfield. The names of David's sons were Jonathan, Ceppas, Seth and Eliju. Jonathan, the other brother, had two sons, Clement and Ceppas. They resided in Deer-field for some time. Ceppas had one son named Marion, but Clement had quite a family of boys whose names were Samuel, Walter, Grey and Clement and six daughters, Mira, Lena, Clara, Phena, Rachel and Auretta, and he thought he ought to emigrate to some newly settled country in order that his family might settle around him. He moved to Richmond, Vermont on the Onion river; however, his family soon scattered. Samuel settled in Louisville, N.H. where he died leaving four sons, Simpson Samuel, Harris and Horace. Grey settled in Bakersville, (Bakersfield) Vermont. He had three sons Sylvanus, Samuel and Grey. Walter emigrated to Michigan in 1834, where he died in 1834 leaving four sons, Lyman, Ceppas, Benajah, and Walter, and two daughters, Auretta and Mary. They settled in different parts of the United States and are all living at present, of whom I am the youngest son.
