Stevenson Bible
This Bible gives a detailed account of the descendants of Robert George Stevenson (1797-1867) and his wife Janet Wallace, who came to Poplar Ridge, Jefferson Co., Ind., from Kilmarnock, Scotland. Robert’s brother James Stevenson also came to this country and his death in 1865 is recorded in this Bible. Janet Wallace’s sister Margaret (Peggy) Wallace came with Janet and her children, but died in Pennsylvania, on the way to Indiana, according to a family history written by Walter Stevenson of Puyallup Wash., a grandson of Robert Stevenson Sr.
The Bible was still owned by a descendant in 1990s. The Bible gives not only dates but the narrative that is transcribed here about where the family originated in Scotland. I am not sure of the order in which the individual pages appear in the Bible, as these were transcribed from xerographic copies. The Bible does, in fact, give different dates for Robert Stevenson Jr., and his wife Barbara Sterrett on different pages. It is clear from one comment that some of the entries were made by Robert Stevenson Jr., 1812-1896, son of Robert Stevenson and Janet Wallace. Robert Stevenson Jr. was a well known Baptist minister. Another note clearly indicates that a child of Robert and Barbara’s wrote the couple’s death dates. The Duch Presbyterian cemetery mentioned is the cemetery of the former Pleasant Township Presbyterian Church.
The pages also include birth dates of George Wallace, Janet Fisher, and James and Margaret Wallace. Although the relationships are not given, other records indicate that these are the parents and brother of sister of Janet Wallace Stevenson.
Robert Stevenson Senior’s farm is still in the possession (2001) of a great-grandson, Dale Stevenson (Robert Dale.)
I have preserved originally spellings and in several cases, line breaks. –Robert Scott, January 12, 2001
