Current Location: Section 26, Township 4 North, Range 10 East
On June 1, 1826, Daniel and Susan Baxter purchased from Daniel's parents (James and Rebecca Baxter) the northwest quarter of section 22, in what is now Monroe Township. The Baxter family cemetery was located in the southwest corner of this quarter section, on Shun Pike Road. On August 19, 1872, Daniel and Susan sold this quarter section to their daughter Mary Chambers, and her husband James. After Mary died in 1905, her heirs sold 120 acres of this quarter section to Lincoln and Eva Lee, at a public auction held on October 1, 1906. The Lees sold this property to Walter R. and Mary E. Day on December 11, 1908.
The Day family lived here for 32 years until early 1941, when the United States Government established the Jefferson Proving Ground for war efforts. As the Day farm was located inside the proving zone, it was purchased by the government on April 3, 1941. However, the deed excluded the cemetery, and described it as being one-half acre; 8 poles north and south, and 10 poles east and west (or 132' x 165'). The following month, on May 19, 1941, the U.S. Government purchased the Baxter cemetery grounds, along with several other cemeteries in the same situation. Baxter Cemetery representatives were: Lillard Custer, Monroe Township trustee; Michael G. Heitz, Cleve Yost, and Harry Lindsey, members of the Advisory Board of Monroe Township. The Baxter Cemetery was relocated to the east side of the 1500 block of Michigan Road, at Madison. And, on August 26, 1941, the Jefferson County Re-Interment Association, Inc. deeded the new 0.458 acre burial ground to John H. Commiskey, Daniel B. Schoolcraft and Robert G. Chambers, Baxter Cemetery Trustees. At the present time (2002) the Baxter Cemetery does not have a cemetery association. Fortunately, the cemetery is kept in good condition due to the generosity of a trustee from the adjoining Bayless and Monroe Cemeteries, who hired a caretaker.
In a newspaper article written by Charles Heberhart in 1940, shortly before Baxter Cemetery was relocated, he stated that there was an iron-fence around Daniel and Susan Baxter's lot. Unfortunately, this fence was not transferred to the new cemetery location. A photograph of the Baxter lot, showing the iron fence was printed in the Indianapolis News in 1941, along with an article reprinted from The Madison Courier, dated October 6, 1919. The reprinted Courier article was a story on the Baxter brothers who served in the Union Army, during the Civil War. These men were the nephews of Daniel Baxter, and are not buried at the Baxter Cemetery.
