The Bayless Cemetery began as a family cemetery on the farm of Nathaniel & Mary Bayless, on Paper Mill Road, near Wirt, in Section 4, Town 4N, Range 10E. According to tombstone death dates, Nathaniel was the first to be buried here in 1851. There were at least five more burials before Mary also passed away in March, 1879. A year later, on Feb. 27, 1880, their son James W. Bayless sold the cemetery which included 2 3/4 acres for $110, to the Trustees of the Union Burying Ground (James W. Bayless, Elisha Golay & Benjamin Mayfield).

In 1941, the United States Government established the Jefferson Proving Ground for war efforts. As the Bayless Cemetery was on part of the land needed by the War Department, it was removed to a site immediately south of the Fairmount Cemetery, on Michigan Road, in North Madison (Section 26, Town 4 North, Range 10 East). The Jefferson County Reinterment Association, Inc. surveyed and studied the cemetery maps before moving the graves. The new tract was laid out by survey and a map prepared, on which all lots were provided for with identical dimensions being used. At the time of the relocation, a Madison Courier article stated "It was found that the occupants of some graves were unknown and in many instances the graves were unmarked excepting for the identification tag as to location which was enclosed in a glass container. Many of these unmarked graves will remain so only until the proper stones are placed. Others have no permanent marker but of course are known to the families." The Bayless Cemetery is currently well-maintained by the Union Burial Ground Bayless Cemetery Association.

The Lund Cemetery, which was orginally located on the south side of S.R. 56, near the Ohio River, Section 33, T4N, R10E, was moved to the Bayless Cemetery ca 1952-3, when the Indiana Kentucky Electric Company began. These five stones (8 burials) are now located next to the old Bayless lot. The burials range from 1837 to 1910.

There are thirty-six known veterans buried here. Ten veterans were in the Civil War, nine in the WWI, and sixteen in WWII, and one in the Korean War. Included in the Civil War count, are two which were moved here from the Lund Cemetery.

The DAR surveyd the Bayless Cemetery ca 1939, before it was moved to its present location. I compared their survey to the tombstone inscriptions. I have made additions and corrections where they were obvious. If I was not certain of an inscription, I fell back on the DAR's transcription and noted it as such. Bold face type indicate stones that are on the DAR's list, but were not found by me. To denote single stones, I have used [ss]; to identify burials in the fenced in area, I have used [F].

Notes:

There is a white stone about 2 feet tall, laying on its side,
beside Edding stones. Only inscription on this stone is
on the top: "Gillespie."

Fairly recent burial next to Walter Sudlow. No identification marker.
A basket of silk flowers on grave.

There appears to be an unmarked grave near the Bland stones.
The ground has sunk; depression is in the shape of a grave.
