Ryker’s Ridge Cemetery began as a family or community cemetery. Ryker’s Ridge Baptist Church was founded in 1840 and it was preceded in 1818 by a non-denominational church. But there are tombstones with death dates before 1818, including Jane Hillis and Ann VanCleave Kennedy in 1816, and Philip Easton in 1817. The stones for the latter two are later editions, although Ann’s is next to a large field stone. There are 13 other Hillis stones, along with 4 Ryker stones with death dates before 1840, not counting the unmarked grave of Col. John Ryker. Many of the early families were Presbyterian and attended the first Presbyterian Church in Madison. This included the Hillises, Van Cleaves, and Rykers. John Ryker, Gerardus Ryker and their wives withdrew from the Madison Presbyterian Church in 1820. Samuel Ledgerwood was a member of the Carmel Presbyterian Church, which also had preaching on Ryker’s Ridge. The 1831 minutes of the Presbyterian General Assembly lists the membership of Ryker’s Ridge Presbyterian organization (whether a full church or mission is not known) at 20 and gives it a Stated Supply, which means it didn’t have its own minister. It is possible it dates from 1820 when the Ryker’s withdrew from Madison. It is also possible the cemetery is associated with either the non-denominational church or with the Presbyterian group,
The DAR did not copy many inscriptions for young children and infants. And it’s hard to blame them, because in those pre-computer days they had masses of information to transcribe. Nevertheless, in Ryker’s Ridge, an unusual number of stones were missed. Allowing that most stones had death dates before 1920 and that some were probably not erected until the second spouse died, I estimate the count missed about 50 of the stones present before 1920. There was also no consistency. Many young children of the Ryker family were transcribed, but those of other families were not. The DAR typically used wife of, instead of his wife, in cases where both spouses were memorialized on a single stone. Often, month and days and age at death were omitted. One omission that can through off calculations was the many stones here that use “in the 50th year of his or her age” instead of died age 50. A person who died age 50 in 1850 was born in 1800. A person in the 50th year, had not yet turned 50 and could have been born in 1801. Most of these were changed. I have used bold face to denote differences in readings, omitted information or stones. I have also noted where the DAR added comments, such as relationships, that are not on the stones.
One note: There are two stones that are located at the extreme edges of the cemetery, away from all other stones. One is for Levi and Lucy Nuttall, which the DAR notes were African Americans. The other is Virginia Landrum. The DAR does not note, but the Landrums were a black family. It’s interesting to have this placement since Ryker’s Ridge has always been proud of the role its members played in the Underground Railroad.
There are some stones that need to be rechecked, owing to errors popping up in transcription. This cemetery does not include the new section of the Ryker’s Ridge burial ground, a half mile north.
Add bold face inscriptions or names are additions by Robert W. Scott and were not in the original DAR transcription.
