Manville Cemetery
Milton Twp. Section 15 Twp. 4N Range 11E.
The Manville Christian Church developed from religious divisions within the nearby Milton Baptist Church. The church officially claims a founding date of 1830. The first certain date in the church’s history is May 11, 1834 when Benjamin Emberson sold land for the church site to the trustees (Jefferson Co. Deed Book W p. 13.) Church records in the 19th century consist only of a list of members with occasional dates, so there is no evidence regarding when the cemetery was first used. It may have developed from a Manville family cemetery. There were ten people with the name Manville buried in the cemetery at the time that the John Paul Chapter DAR transcribed dates. None of these people is on the membership rolls. The congregation was known as the Christian Church of Milton Township until at least 1858, when the name Manville was given to the post office nearby. The few church minutes after 1900 give some burials that are not marked.
The church is on the north side of Wolf Run Road and on the south side of the West Fork of the Indian-Kentuck Creek. The cemetery is on a hill on the south side of Wolf Run Road. The transcriptions by the DAR are spotty. Although most of the DAR transcriptions were done about 1941, many stones before that date were missed.
This represents a complete resurvey by Robert W. Scott. (July 3, 2001)
Information added from other sources is given in brackets. [ ] Inscriptions that are on stones are listed in quotation marks, “ ”. with the exception that ages and information indicating that a person is a son, daughter, or wife of another person are copied from the stones without adding punctuation.
Two or more names inscribed on the same stone are indicated by having the names follow a single surname. Question marks are given after a number whose reading is uncertain.
