Morris Chapel was a Methodist Episcopal Church founded in 1856 or 1859 on the farm of James Brooks, according to an early twentieth century history of Milton Township. The cemetery itself has a modern-looking concrete slab at the entrance with the following information about the church. “Founded A.D. 1859. Dedicated May 21, 1860. Razed, Dec. 22,1973.” The building’s dedication occurred within a week of May 14, 1860 when James Brooks and wife, Sarah, deeded a tract of undisclosed size in SW1/4 Section 6 Twp. 3N Range 12E (Jefferson Co. Deed Book 18 p. 96) to the church trustees. The church replaced the nearby Armstrong Chapel, which was left inaccessible by a change in the Ohio River. The congregation waned after the founding of the Brooksburg Methodist Church in 1891, less than two miles away. The earliest burial found is 1864, the latest 1994, but this is essentially an inactive cemetery.

The cemetery is located just upstream from Brooksburg. To reach it, take State Road 56 East towards Vevay. After the Indian-Kentuck Creek, take the second right, Splinter Ridge Road. The cemetery is on a lane, an immediate right from this road. The graveyard is currently mowed and in good repair.

The 1941 published transcriptions by the John Paul Chapter DAR omitted the stones for many children and infants. This transcription, using the DAR readings as a starting point, offers information on 125 more persons. In some cases, the DAR included maiden names which are not on the stones, but were known to the transcribers. Information in quotes, “” is on the stones. Information in brackets are my comments. Multiple inscriptions on a single stone are indicated by having multiple names follow a single surname. Transcriptions done on July 11, 2002.

Jefferson County: Morris Chapel Cemetery addition

Stephen Quinn. A brief note in the Daily Democrat of 6 Jan. 1891 said he died on 30 Dec. 1890, at his home of Lost Fork. He was buried on New York’s Day at what the paper called the Morris cemetery, obviously Morris Chapel. However, his grave is not marked. A family record shows his birth date was Dec. 12, 1805.
