Short Graveyard


on Blackhawk Hill

Shelby Township, Jefferson County, Indiana

This graveyard is located East of Canaan, Indiana on East Prong Road about 2 miles from Hwy. 62, on the east side of the road way up on Blackhawk Hill (about 1/8 of a mile before you get to the intersection of East Prong & Lonnis Hill Road.) I wouldn't have made it up there, or found it, if it weren't for the property owner taking me up on his 4 wheeler. This was a beautiful spot.

I surveyed this graveyard with the help of George Backus on November 1, 2000.

Note by Ruth Hoggatt: The original 1941 Jefferson County Cemetery book by the D.A.R. is at the local Historical Society. A loose sheet of paper is tucked in the pages with these three burials listed. Also written on this paper is "Shelby Twp. on top of Blackhawk (North of Old Seals Fork School)". This note was written by D. Jackson.
