Membership List of the
Manville Christian Church.

The original name of the Manville Christian Church was the Christian
Church of Milton Township, as shown when the congregation reported the
election of officers in1856. This should not be surprising, because the
name Manville was not applied to the local post office, which was
originally named Buena Vista, until 1858. It should be assumed the church
name was changed after 1858. The church was formed by members who broke
away from the nearby Milton Baptist Church, which was founded in 1829.
Among early Manville members on this list, John Lanham and William Yates
were messengers from Milton Baptist to the Coffee Creek Association in
1829.
The membership list for Manville Christian Church appears to start
with the church's founding. Unfortunately, the earliest minutes that
survive date from August 25,1907. So the only record for the church in
the Nineteenth Century is this list of names, with occasional dates
entered. It should be assumed the names were entered chronologically
and that members entered with no dates joined between the previous date
and next date shown. The membership numbers are on the original record.
Spellings have also been preserved from the original, for example,
Lockeridge, instead of the more common Lockridge. I have also followed
the record is using ditto marks, when those were used to indicate repeated
names and dates. A number of remarks are included, but these don’t occur
with regularity until late in the 1800s. The remarks seem to indicate the
churches that members joined after leaving Manville.
The first person on the list, Benjamin Emberson, sold the land for the
church lot to the trustees in May 11, 1834. Although the church claims a
founding of 1830, no official record can be found earlier than this date.
The earliest known minister on the list is Aaron Ames Nov. 10, 1801 -
July 23,1854, who is buried in the church cemetery. The first date Sept.
1836 (?), given as for Mary Short, member number 13, is transcribed as
given in the original and is probably accurate. Certainly, among the first
36 members, Elizabeth Short, member number 34, died July 12, 1837 and is
buried in the Old Bethel Cemetery in Craig Township in Switzerland Co.
where the Jacob and Elizabeth Short and the John Buchanan family had
moved. The record seems to indicate that at least from member number 13,
until member 56, all joined in September 1836. A number of names have the
same date besides them. These probably indicate revivals, particularly the
54 people who joined in April 1894. This included members of the Green,
Rogers, and Buchanan families who had been members of the Milton Baptist
Church, went disappeared between 1881 and 1883.
Church Officers
Because of the lack of minutes, there are few sources for church officers.
The 1834 deed transferring the land for the church lot is one. An 1856
election of officers is another. Although many churches reported their
elections to county officials with some regularity, this is the only record
I have found in the Nineteenth Century for Manville.

There are two parts to the membership list in the church records.
The first is a chronological list given here. The second is an
alphabetical list that is indexed to the membership numbers.
It starts late in the century. The only difference is that some women
in the alphabetical list are indexed by married names and by maiden
names in the chronological list. I have added the married names to
this list in parenthesis. It should not be assumed that every member
is listed here. On May 4, 1913, Charles Martin is listed on a church
committee, but his name appears nowhere on this list. One odd point,
although there are many Manvilles buried in the church cemetery,
no male named Manville is on this list.
