Alien and Citizenship Records 1819-1848

This list was compiled by Mary Hill and the John Paul DAR from records at the Jefferson County courthouse. The original listings were by separate books. I have alphabetized all the listings from all the books that were transcribed. One problem is that the categories that were transcribed are slightly different for each book. The column for dates is the biggest difficulty. In some cases, the dates transcribed are clearly the dates the alien arrived in the United States. I have used the word arrived only when it is given in the text. In other cases, they reflect when the alien registered in court. In some cases, it’s not clear which is meant. Also, some entries are listed by order book and page, but in most cases only the book is given. Most books are designated by a letter–B, C, D--while one book was listed only as 1839-40. If you don’t find your ancestor here for the period covered (1819-roughly 1848) try a neighboring county, especially if your ancestor lived near a county boundary. I have found several residents of the Scottish settlement in Shelby Twp. whose records are in Switzerland Co.
A GREAT DEAL OF JUDGMENT should be exercised in using this list. The lists do not explain why certain men registered more than once, one at least 11 years apart (Andrew Morton), others four or five, some two. Five would seem logical because the citizenship process takes five years, so this clearly isn’t what is at work. My best guess is that some entries are renewed registrations of resident aliens in the process of pursuing citizenship.
Matching men of the same name can be also complicated. Sometimes men of the same may be listed years apart with ages or locations that don’t match–but the individual is known to be the same person. Sometimes, there are men with the same name and different ages who came at the same time. A point of origin may be given one time as the country of birth, such as Scotland, and the next time as the point of embarkation, such as Liverpool. Moreover, the town listed may only be the point of embarkation. Greenock, Scotland, was a popular port, but it usually wasn’t the home of those coming to the U.S. Places are copied as listed, even though there are some non-existent locations. Sometimes, Havre de Grace is given as being in Germany. The intent is obviously that the man was from Germany, but embarked from Havre de Grace in France.
Several trends are easily discernible in these lists. Almost all of Jefferson County’s early immigration was from the British Isles, Germany, or Switzlerland. Immigration in the 1820s had a heavy Scottish and British flavor. But there was a steady tide of Irish Immigration in 1820s on. This wave of Irish immigration came well before the potato famine, just as much of the German immigration preceded the 1848 uprisings that triggered many Germans to migrate to the United States.

Names somewhat overlap with the first Book B transcription, but not completely.
Book C (or G, typing is fuzzy). Date not Given. Dates range between 1825 and 1837.
Most dates are emigration dates.
Book C. A second Book C page. Some emigration dates are given, but most dates appear to be registrations in Jefferson Co., not arrivals.
Book D. Dates range from 1828 to 1830. A number of these are clearly registration dates of men who arrived years earlier, particularly in the cases of some Scottish immigrants.
Book E. Dates range between 1819 and 1840 so most appear to be immigration or arrival dates. A handful appear to be registration dates.
Book F. Dates given range from 1831 to 1834. Not Know if these are arrivals or registrations
Book F. A second page with different listings. Arrivals in New York are sometimes given along with apparent dates of Jefferson Co. registrations.

Book G. Dates given are often specified as arrivals, most from 1830 to 1837
