CULBERTSON FAMILY

By Robert W. Scott
© 2002

This narrative draws heavily on an account put together by Mary Hill and C.R. Voris, both Culbertson descendants, which was probably written in the 1940s. It puts their accounts in what I believe is a much more readable format. I have also inserted many tombstone transcriptions and marriage dates that were not included in either account and have added descendants, particularly on the Scott and Ralston lines, that were not tracked by either.

The Culbertson family of Switzerland and Jefferson Counties originated in the parish of Campbelltown on an island in the county of Argyleshire, Scotland. An account, relayed Miss Hill, says that the family came from Central England and was Saxon in origin, but gives no clue when it moved to Scotland. This account takes the family to a Lord Louden, Duke of Argyll, who had a younger son named James Campbell who went from Ayr to Argyleshire about 1660. He had a daughter Jean, who married James Culbertson. This marriage is given as occurring on 13 Nov. 1716 in the parish of Campbelltown. Culbertson had a farm five miles north of Campbelltown, Kintyre. The farm was still called Lagan Farm when Miss Hill’s account was typed and Culbertsons still lived there at that time. She says Lord Louden is listed as one of the five signers of the first “Solemn League & Covenant” in 1638.

The account does not give the ancestry of James Culbertson, but the transcribed Culbertson parish records go back to 29 Aug. 1690 when Robert Cuthbertson and Ann Bre-Kanrige baptized a son William. These transcribed records do not include any James of the right age to be James Culbertson. Nothing more is given about James and Jean, other than the baptisms of their children, which all list James and Jean as the parents. We should assume that James was born around 1695. He certainly could be the son of Robert Cuthbertson and Anne Breckenridge because parish records often have gaps, or parents simply did not officially record christenings and births. The fact that James named his oldest son Robert is promising. The only record I have found for this couple is the baptisms, which give each child as a son or daughter of James Culbertson and James Campbell.

Children of James Culbertson and Jean Campbell
1. JANET CUTHBERTSON/CULBERTSON, baptized 30 Dec. 1718 in Campbelltown
2. JANET CUTHBERTSON bapt. 6 Aug. 1720 in Campbelltown. (The first Janet probably died and the parents named the second child Janet. This was a common practice.)
3. ROBERT CUTHBERTSON bapt. 2 Dec. 1722 in Campbelltown. He m. Agnes (Nannie) Harvey on 7 Feb. 1748 in Campbelltown.
4. WILLIAM CUTHBERTSON bapt. 14 Oct.1724 in Campbelltown
5. ELIZABETH CUTHBERTSON bapt. 24 Apr. 1726 in Campbelltown
6. ANN CUTHBERTSON, bapt. 6 Oct. 1728 in Campbelltown
7. WILLIAM CUTHBERTSON, bapt. 7 Jan. 1733 in Campbelltown (The first William probably died.)
8. MARGARET CUTHBERTSON, bapt. 20 Apr. 1735

Robert Cuthbertson
No information is given about Robert Cuthbertson, except for his baptismal date and marriage date as given above. Although the Hill and Voris records list James as children of this couple James’ baptism and marriage date is not given in the transcribed parish records.

Children of Robert Cuthbertson and Agnes Harvey
1. JANET CUTHBERTSON ch. 4. March 1750
2. WILLIAM CUTHBERTSON ch. 15 July 1753
3. ROBERT CUTHBERTSON ch. 23 June 1755
4. ROBERT CUTHBERTSON ch. 10 Jan. 1758
5. JOHN CUTHBERTSON ch. 6 June 1760.
6. JAMES CULBERTSON/CUTHERBERSON, (have not found his baptismal record)

James Culbertson
JAMES CULBERTSON, son of Robert, lived on the Skerbolin Farm near Campbelltown. Their marriage date is somewhat confused. Miss Hill’s records show them as married in 1788 and one transcription of the Campbelltown parish records by the LDS gives the date as 23 March 1788. However, another transcription by the LDS gives 22 May 1779 and this is more consistent with the birth and christening dates also transcribed by the LDS.

The couple came to America in 1818 and settled near what was to become Caledonia Cemetery. According to an account in the History of Ohio, Dearborn, and Switzerland Counties (printed in1885), the family landed in Philadelphia, went overland to Pittsburgh, and came down the Ohio in a big Skiff. James Culbertson died Sept. 1821 and Janet White, died July 1834. According to the DAR cemetery transcriptions, published in 1941, they were buried on the farm of Samuel Culbertson and their remains were removed by Edgar Culbertson and John Scott to Caledonia Cem. A stone was set in their memory in 1939, but it has no dates.

This couple had eight children. The names were compiled as part of a history by C.R. Voris of Fairbury, Illinois, son of Mary Culbertson Voris. Most of these are given in the will of Jennett Culbertson, written 2 July 1827 in Switzerland Co., and proved on 29 July 1834. Their son William was executor. The will names daughters, Jennett Turner and Agnes McKay, and sons, William, John, James, and Samuel. Sons Robert and Peter were dead by then. They are also verified by the LDS transcription of Campbelltown parish records which show the same individuals separately born or christened as children of James Culbertson and Janet White.

Four of the brothers lived near each other in Indiana. James Culbertson patented the SE1/4 Sec. 32 Twp. 5N Range 12E on 29 June 1820. John patented the NE1/4, adjoining James on the North. Samuel Culbertson owned adjoining property in Switzerland County that included the site for the Caledonia Church. In fact, the land for the church was carved from the holdings of all three brothers. Land for the church and cemetery was deeded by John Culbertson and wife Margaret to the trustees on Aug. 16, 1827 in Jefferson Co. and also from his brother John Culbertson in Jefferson Co. (Jefferson Co. Deed Book E p. 19) and from brother James (Jefferson Co. Deed Book D p. 547) and Samuel Culbertson in Switzerland County. (Switzerland Co. Deed Book C p. 380.)

1. JEAN CULBERTSON (Jennette), ch 29 Aug. 1780 in Campbelltown. Since Jean, Janet and Jennette are interchangeble it's likely this Jean died young.
