3. James Duffy
The Wallace MS says: "Your Uncle James Duffy followed the river -- Ohio -- in his younger days, running on flat boats and keel boats. Later on a farm. He died at or near North Madison, Ind. He was twice married. Cousin Jim Duffy, the old-time dairy [man at] Ulan for over 40 years, who lives at Pressburg was a son by the last wife. Her name was Thompson. He [Uncle James] had 3 daughters and one son by the first wife. The son died some 20 or 25 years ago. The girls married and raised nice families of children -- a son of Kysiar Rawlings was & may be yet in New York City & was said to be an expert telegrapher, even in New York."
Also according to the Wallace MS., "James Duffy, eldest son of John and Nancy Duffy was married about the year 1823 to a Miss ----- (name unknown to Wallace). Raised three girls, one son: 1. Nancy (Noble); 2. Mary Jane (Rollins); 3. Kysian (Rollins); 4. Alexander.
"By second marriage to Jane Thompson (Boyd the transcriber of the Wallace MS says "my note -- think this was Jane Thornton") abt 1837-38, had children: 1. James Duffy, Jr., 1837-38, of North Madison (wife was Miss ----- Black); 2. Alfred Duffy, born 1840, of Jefferson Co."
The family Bible says that James was born in OH (in either 1800 or 1801) and died near Madison, Jefferson Co. IN in 1855 at 54. But the Bible entry has a "?" and a possible strikeover of "54" over "57" for age at death. In the 1850 census, the only James Duffy in Jefferson Co. was in Republican Twnshp, as was John Duffy Sr., and was born in 1797-98 (age 52 in mid-1850, which would make him 57 at death in 1855), and was born in PA, not OH. The 1880 census for daughter Keziah says that her parents were born in OH. The confusion may be due to the fact that Ohio did not become a state until 1803 -- or it may be an assumption on the part of Keziah and other children that her father was born in OH because his wife was born there and they were married there, so the children assumed they had always lived there.
According to "Family Finder - Marriages 1789-1850 OH" (a CD at Selby Libe in Sarasota), marriages for Ohio Duffy include:
James Duffy married Elenor Latta, 12 Feb 1818 in Adams Co. OH
James Duffy married Margaret Boatman, 28 Jan 1819 in Adams Co. OH
(source for both citations: State Libe, Columbus OH)
James Duffy marr Susannah Buts or Butts, 13 Nov 1817 in Columbiana Co. OH
(source: LDS MF 0927766).We think one of the two Adams Co marriages is most likely, since Adams County is in SW OH near KY and IN, and is adjacent to Brown Co., where (probably) brother Andrew Duffy married:
Andrew Duffy married Keziah Lawwill, 8 Nov 1818 in Brown Co. OH
(source: LDS MF 0384273-0384274). Note: Brown Co OH was formed from Adams Co and Cleremont Co in 1818.In the 1820 US Census for Jefferson Co IN appears:

(Try to get 1840 census records; see whether 1st wife was still alive).
According to the 1850 census for Republican Twnshp, Jefferson Co. IN, p. 155:
James Duffy -- 1 M 52 Laborer born PA (born 1797-1798)

Slevin, 1985, at Bradenton Libe) says Jane's maiden name was THORNTON, not THOMPSON. However, we have a copy of a handwritten record from the Madision IN library that says: "I do hereby certify that on Tuesday the second day of January 1838 I solemnized the bonds of matrimony between James Duffy and Jane Thompson as witness my hand and seal this 25th day of Janry 1838. A. Rinnear, J. P. (seal). This seems to settle the matter is favor of "Thompson".

According to courthouse records, West Union, Adams Co, OH, marriages for Duffy include:
James Duffy married Elenor Latta, 12 Feb 1818 in Adams Co. OH.Also, per CDs:
James Duffy married Margaret Boatman, 28 Jan 1819 in Adams Co. OH
(source for citation: State Libe, Columbus OH)
James Duffy marr Susannah Buts or Butts, 13 Nov 1817 in Columbiana Co. OH
(source: LDS MF 0927766).Adams County is in southwest OH near KY and IN, and is adjacent to Brown County, where James's brother Andrew Duffy married Keziah Lawwill on 8 Nov 1818. Note: Brown County OH was formed from Adams Co and Cleremont Co in 1818.
Tending to confirm Eleanor Latta as the wife of James Duffy is the following note, part of a letter written on 29 April 1839 by Jane Latta, an unmarried sister of Elenor Latta, to one of her cousins, talking about the state of her brothers and sisters:".... My brother, Robert, lives one mile from us, and has three children. Brother John lives in Attica, Indiana and lost his wife July 9, 1837. They had been married only six months. I received a letter from him and he is well. Sister Margaret Herrington lost her husband September 6, 1837. She lives in Jefferson Co, Indiana and has no children. I received a letter from brother William, dated September 26, 1838. He lost his wife a few days before he wrote, with a fever. He lives in Jefferson Co, Indiana. Sister Elenor Duffy died September 7, 1838, of consumption. She left six children, her oldest daughter is married, and took her mother's babe to raise. My half sister, Hannah, married a Mr. Tailor (Taylor) last February and her mother died March 22. Aunt and Thomas were very sick."
Eleanor Latta evidently died shortly after the birth of her daughter Keziah in Nov 1834, since, per "Hoosier Journal of Ancestry" special publication on Jefferson County (in Bradenton Libe), page 60, James Duffy married (second) Jane Thornton 2 Jan 1837 (1838 per some sources). The above letter says Elenora died 7 Sep 1838, but there is a conflict between her death date and marriage of husband to second wife. To be researched.
In the 1860 census, Jane is 55, b. KY, and has children Alfred 19 and Susan 17, presumably by James. The differences in James' wife's age from 1830 census to 1850 and 1860 censuses confirms the fact that he was married twice -- as was his father John.
Per 1880 U.S. Census for Keziah Rawlings, her father was born in OH and so was her mother.
Per "Hoosier Journal of Ancestry" special publication on Jefferson County (in Bradenton Libe), page 60, James Duffy married Jane Thornton 2 Jan 1837 (But note: CD 228 says James Duffy married Jane Thornton 2 Jan 1838, not 1837.)
In the 1860 census, Jane is 55, b. KY, and has children Alfred 19 and Susan 17, presumably by James. Due to differences in James' wife's age from 1830 census to 1850 and 1860 census, our guess is he was married twice -- as was his father John, probably.
In the "Latta Genealogy" (found on Yahoo), Branch #1, Andrew Latta, who with his family "went to Ohio" after April 1809, had a daughter named Elenora Latta who married a "Mr. Duffy" and "Left 6 children" when she died on "September 7, 1838".
Also in above Branch #1, Eleanora's sister, Margaret B. Latta, b. 12 Sep 1813, married a Mr. Harrington, and went to live in Jefferson Co IN. No children. Husband died 6 Sep 1837. We should look for Mrs. Margaret Harrington in 1850 census for JeffCo IN.
OH marriage records include a James Duffy who married an Eleanor Latta on 12 Feb 1818 in Adams Co, OH. This same James Duffy, I believe, was living in Maysville KY (across the Ohio River from Adams Co.) at the time of his marriage, and in 1819 moved with his wife and family to Jefferson Co, IN.
Note: June 26 1833, southern IN hit hard with Cholera epidemic. Madison hit hard.

Living with the family of James and Melissa Duffy is James' mother, Jane:
Jane Duffy, mother, widow, age 74, b KY, f b IRE, m b HOLLAND.
25. Sarah Duffy
A "Sarah Duffy" is listed, with the family of James and Jane Duffy in the 1850 census, as aged 7 (though it looks somewhat like a "1"), along with an apparently twin brother named Alfred.
In the 1860 census, Jane is 55, b. KY, and has children Alfred 19 and Susan 17, by James as per Wallace MS. Probably "Sarah" decided to call herself "Susan" by the time she reached 17 -- per "Hoosier Journal of Ancestry" special publication on Jefferson County (in Bradenton Libe), page 60.

In the 1880 census for Kent Twp, Jefferson Co, IN, MF T9-0288, pg 248B, William R. Duffy, farmer, 75, is listed with wife Elizabeth, 65, and dau Martha, 40, single.
In a book on cemetery records in Jefferson Co. IN (Cemetery Rcds of Jefferson Co IN, compiled by John Paul Chapter of DAR, 1941, at DAR Libe), birth and death date per Cemetery Records of Jefferson Co. IN compiled by DAR, 1941. William is listed as buried at Fairmount Cem., Section 26-4-10.
An Elizabeth Thompson is listed in one place (on a gravestone) as wife of William R. Duffy; an Elizabeth Perkins is listed in another place (marriage record), with a marriage date of 28 Feb 1865. We suspect that after the death of William's first wife in 1864, he married again, in 1865, to Elizabeth Thomas Perkins or Elizabeth Perkins Thomas, a widow.
Marriage to Melissa Cooper was performed by J.F. Crowe, per DAR source cited. Data extracted from 1850 census for Smyrna Twnshp, Jefferson Co. IN, page 152. Assumption is that this William is James' brother. Marriage date and place is per CD-ROM at Selby Libe on KY Marriages. (Note: Gallatin Co KY is just across the Ohio River and a few miles east from Madison IN, and perhaps 60 miles west of Brown Co. OH). Did William go to KY in the 1820s and James go to OH in 1818 ?
In a book on cemetery records in Jefferson Co. IN (Cemetery Rcds of Jefferson Co IN, compiled by John Paul Chapter of DAR, 1941, at DAR Libe), birth and death date per Cemetery Records of Jefferson Co. IN compiled by DAR, 1941. William is listed as buried at Fairmount Cem., Section 26-4-10. However, the Wallace MS says he was buried at the Hopewell Cem in Smyrna Twp, Jeffersoon Co IN. Is the Hopewell William a different one?
His death certificate (compiler has copy) says he died of "old age (broken down)". Burial place given as "unknown".
To confuse things further, a note from Tom Taylor to the compiler says "Death: W. D. Duffy of Kent, born PA 1805, to Jefferson Co in 1819. Burial at Pokebury Church. (Sept 5, 1889)". Taylor's source appears to be a newspaper obit, though that is not clear in his note.
According to the Wallace MS, the family of W.R. and Melissa Duffy lived at Smyrna Twp., Section 16 T4 NR 9 East, from 1839 to 1864, and during this period 6 children were born to them.

Indianapolis attended. [4, 5]Per note from Tom Taylor, on a page titled "Land Grantees", says: A.M. Duffy "appears to be a builder in Madison 1834-1841. Several parcels of land."Actually Alexander Duffy was a chairmaker, according to notes from the Wallace MS. Alexander "carried on the business in the city along in the thirties... and died about 1837-38 leaving a young wife and three daughters...." This is slightly inaccurate if the 1844 obit from Tom Taylor refers to this Alexander.
Death date per note from Tom Taylor. Note that the Wallace MS gives an approximate date of 1836, and is probably in error.
