Descendants of John? Duffy

Notes

16. Nancy Duffy

Listed in 1820 and 1830 censuses with the Duffy family. A Latta letter says Eleanor's oldest daughter raised Kesiah Duffy.

In the 1850 census for Jefferson Co, IN, pg 27B, we found:

Thomas Noble, age 34, M, laborer, $300 RE owned, b KY
Nancy " age 31, F, b OH
Oliver L. Noble age 11, M, b IN, attended school within the year
Thomas G. Noble age 9, M, b IN, " "
James C. Noble age 8, M, b IN, " "
Mary E. Noble age 6, F, b IN
Amanda J. Noble age 3, F, b IN
Hesekiah Duffy, age 15, M, b IN (no mark for attending school; also note "male").

19. Mary Jane Duffy

Listed in 1830 census with this family.

Mary Jane and Keziah Duffy were sisters who married brothers, Harvey and Leroy Rawlings. Mary Jane died in 1851, at the age of 27, and is buried in the Methodist graveyard (on the Graham farm) Section 15-5-9, in Lancaster Township, south of Dupont, IN. After her death, Harvey Rawlings married again, to Elizabeth Miller, on 26 May, 1852.

Harvey L. Rawlings

Joan Scott's records show Harvey L. Rawlings and wife Elizabeth A. Rawlings, "residents of Jefferson Co.", sold 14 Apr 1860 property (unspecified by Joan) per LDS Film 1310287.

The Census for 1850, Jefferson Co IN, dwellg 59 fam 60 (same dwelling house as brother Vincent Rawlings in dwellg 59 fam 59) shows:

Harvey L. Rawlings age 32 (b 1827/28) Farmer $1200 b KY
Mary L (?) (probably "J") age 26 (b 1833/34)
Francis age 6 (b 1843/44)
Wm. age 3 (b 1846/47)

According to Joan Scott Deed rcds, Harvey L. Rawlings bought Lots in Tripton, Jennings Co. IN 26 May 1865, Warranty deed rcdd 27 July 1867 (Bk 5, p 23). Therefore he presumably died after July 1867. Note, however, that Joan Scott's records of Jefferson Co. deeds show John (presumably Harvey's youngest son) bought or sold Pt. NE & SW Sec 35, Twp 5, Range 8, Bk 27 p 489 (per LDS Film #131029).

22. Keziah Duffy

Keziah's birth place and date are per our family Bible. Hanover, IN is about 7 miles west southwest of Madison.

Since she was married in Feb 1851, and her birthday as given in the family Bible was 3 Nov 1834, she would have been 17 at her marriage).

Cause of death is listed in Keziah's Death Certificate as cancer of the intestine (sigmoid colon).

Kesiah is not in the 1820 or 1830 census, since she was born in 1834. But we could not find her in the 1840 census, when she would have been 6. However, she is probably with the family of Thomas and Nancy Noble, as she is in 1850, where she is listed in the census as "Hesekiah" a male, age 15. See Thmas Noble family for more info.

Leroy Rawlings

Leroy's birth date and place is per family Bible. His marriage is also per Bible, plus copy of County Clerk's records (License at Madison, 9 Jan 1851; marriage certificate 13 Feb 1851, signed by Jno. H. (?) Taylor, County Clerk.

Leroy Rawlings' chronology follows:

5 Feb 1829 -- Leroy, second son of Eleazer and Louisiana Eastin Rawlings is born at Jeffersonville, Clark Co IN.

Abt 1832 -- Eleazer and family move to a farm at what later will become Dupont, Lancaster Twp, Jeff Co IN. Cholera rages in nearby Madison.

1848 -- At age 19, Leroy finishes his formal schooling, "partly in Madison but mostly in the country" according to his note in his scrapbook, and opens a grocery store at Dupont.

27 Aug 1849 -- Leroy is appointed postmaster at Dupont.

Per National Archives microfilm Roll M841 Roll #33, page 213, "Appointment of Postmasters - 1832-1971": Le Roy [sic] Rawlings was postmaster at Dupont, Jefferson Co. IN from 27 Aug 1849 to 3 Dec 1851.

1850 -- Leroy is listed as postmaster in U.S. census for Dupont, living with parents; father Eleazer is listed as "saddler".

1851 -- On 9 Jan Leroy obtains a marriage license, and on 13 Feb 1851, a month and two days after his 22nd birthday, Leroy marries Keziah Duffy, age 16 yrs 4 mos. Marriage performed by Gam. Taylor (per DAR source cited). Term as Dupont postmaster ends in December, but by this time Leroy is apparently either a certified schoolteacher, or a grocer in partnership with a Mr. O'Neal, or both.

24 Apr 1852 -- Carroll Crary Rawlings, 1st child of Leroy and Keziah Duffy Rawlings, is born at Dupont.

18 Jul 1854 -- Father Eleazer dies at Dupont of "palsy" at age 69. Will is probated Aug 1854; Leroy is 25.

1855 -- Daughter Mary is born.

1857 -- Mother Louisiana dies at Dupont of "pulmonary disease" on 23 May, at age 53; daughter Mary dies on 30 June, at age 2. Leroy is 28; Keziah is 22. Daughter's death may have hit this family hard.

About 1859 -- Leroy and family move to Monrovia, and Leroy starts a grocery business there.

About 1861 -- Leroy sells out the grocery business at Monrovia, obtains a teaching certificate as a "district pedigogue", and begins teaching first at Clayton, later at Cartersburg, Hendricks Co. IN.

Apr 1864 -- An L. C. Rawlings (probably Leroy) sells 40 acres of land in Jefferson Co. to Alex McNutt (SW NE Sec 24, Twp. 5, Range 9 (Bk 22 p 514, LDS film 1310289).

About 1863-1872 -- Leroy works as railroad agent for the Vandalia Railroad at Cartersburg. He may also have been an itinerant ME preacher during this time.

Possibly by 1868 and certainly by early 1872, son Carroll is in Cincinnati, working for Western Union. Carroll marries Ida Walton there, and moves to Lincoln, NE by late 1873, where first child, Kate Clare Rawlings, is born 1 Sep 1873. In early 1873, Leroy resigns at Cartersburg to run a telegraph office at Lincoln, NE, near son and granddaughter.

1879 -- First appears on "Indiana Local Ministers List" in Northwest Conference, for "PO Danville, Denom ME". (List courtesy of Archives of DePauw University and Indiana United Methodism).

Late 1870s -- Moves to Danville, Hendricks Co. IN, becomes County Recorder, preaches part time at various ME Churches.

1880 census for Danville, Hendricks Co, IN, MF T9-0283, pg 532C:

Leroy Rawlings, Depty Record of Co., 51, b IN, f b PA, mo b IN
Keziah Rawlings, keeping house, 45, b IN, f b OH, m b OH
Hattie C. Rawlings, GDau, 6, b NE, f b IN, m b MD.

("Hattie" was probably misread for "Katie").

1893 -- Leroy's name appears for the last time on "Indiana Local Ministers List" in Northwest Conference, for "PO Danville, Denom ME". (List courtesy of Archives of DePauw University and Indiana United Methodism).

Late 1880s and 1890s -- Leroy writes "reminiscences" to Madison "Courier" newspaper (copies in his scrapbook).

25 Jul 1902 -- Leroy dies in Indianapolis at age 73, is buried at Danville.

95. Mary Rawlings

Note: Mary Rawlings is not mentioned in family Bible or other family notes. She is listed as the second child of Leroy and Keziah Duffy in the 1900 U.S. Census "Two children, one still living". Her name and death date are per the Madison Courier for July 11, 1857, which mentions "age two years". In DAR typescript on "Items in Jefferson Co. IN, 1817-1880", her exact date of death is mentioned as 30 Jun 1857, "age 2 years."

Death data per DAR typescript, DAR, Wash DC, "Jefferson Co IN Items 1817-1880", DAR.

23. James Duffy

A James is listed in the 1850 census as aged 11. By 1860 he had probably left home, and is not listed in Jefferson Co.

Per notes from Mrs. Lillian Gilmer in our file, James Jr. "Jim" had a dairy at Ulan, and lived at Pressburg. He was in Co. D 54th Ind. Inf,

The James listed in 1860 Census with Jane Duffy is this James' father (see the "Hoosier Journal of Ancestry" special publication on Jefferson County (in Bradenton Libe), page 60. This James Duffy married Jane Thornton 2 Jan 1838. In the 1860 census, Jane is 55, b. KY, and has children Alfred 19 and Susan 17.

In a book on cemetery records in Jefferson Co. IN (Cemetery Rcds of Jefferson Co IN, compiled by John Paul Chapter of DAR, 1941, at DAR Libe), James is listed as serving in the Army, presumably in the Civil War, with Company D, 54th Ind. Inf.; buried at Fairmount Cem., Section 26-4-10, dates 4 Jan 1839-13 Dec 1924.

In Leroy Rawlings' scrapbook there is a news clipping stating that "Mrs. Duffy", who was "mother of our dairyman, James Duffy", died at her son's home and was buried at Shiloh Cemetery. Previously we had thought the James mentioned in the newspaper was father of our Keziah; now we see that it refers to Keziah's half-brother, the son of her father's second wife. That is --

Per Leroy's scrapbook, page 9, an undated newspaper clipping: "FROM MONDAY'S DAILY, Mrs. Duffy, the mother of Mr. James Duffy, died on Saturday evening at six o'clock. The remains were buried at Shilo at 2 o'clock today."

And a separate newspaper clipping just below it: "Mrs. Duffy, North Madison. Mrs. Duffy was the mother of our dairyman, Mr. James Duffy. Her funeral took place at the residence of her son, at one o'clock this afternoon, and the burial at the cemetery at Volga, Smyrna township."

Melissa Black

Data is per IGI fiche for DUFFY in Jefferson Co. IN, plus book on cemetery records of Jefferson Co. IN. (Cemetery Rcds of Jefferson Co IN, compiled by John Paul Chapter of DAR, 1941, at DAR Libe), Melissa dates 16 Nov 1845-17 mar 1914.

She is buried with husband James Duffy at Fairmount Cem, Sect 26-4-10, in Madison Twp.

97. William P. Duffy

In a book on cemetery records in Jefferson Co. IN (Cemetery Rcds of Jefferson Co IN, compiled by John Paul Chapter of DAR, 1941, at DAR Libe), William is listed as serving in the Army, in the Spanish American War, with Company F, 159th Ind. Inf. He is buried at Fairmount Cem., Section 26-4-10, and gives birth/death dates (page 112).

24. Alfred Duffy

Alfred is listed in 1860 Census with Jane Duffy, maybe James (?) per "Hoosier Journal of Ancestry" special publication on Jefferson County (in Bradenton Libe), page 60. James Duffy married Jane Thornton 2 Jan 1837. In the 1860 census, Jane is 55, b. KY, and has children Alfred 19 and Susan 17, presumably by James.

A typescript at the DAR titled "Jefferson Co. Marriage Records", Alfred married Martha Lichlyter on 24 Jan 1860, not 1861, marr performed by MD Brooke. This date seems unlikely, since he is listed in the census with his mother and no wife in the summer of 1860.

In the 1880 census for Madison, Jefferson Co, IN, MF T9-0287 pg 101D:

Alfred H. Duffey, farmer, 39, b IN, fa b OH, m b KY
Martha Duffey, keeping house, 39, b IN, f b IN, m b KY
Ida M.J. Duffey, 18, b IN
Melvin E. Duffey, 15, b IN
James P. Duffey, 13, b IN
Sarah E. A. Duffey, 11, b IN
india A. Duffey, 6, b IN
Katie C. Duffey, 3, b IN.

Kizziah went to Carroll Co MO around 1877-78 and was listed as a farmer in the 1880 census for Moss Creek Twp, Carroll Co MO.
