94. Carroll Crary "Carl" Rawlings

Per family Bible, Carroll and Ida were married by. Rev A.M.Spahr, pastor of Wesley Chapel M.E.Church in Cincinnati, of which they were both members at that time. According to the Cincinnatti Daily Gazette of Saturday morning, June 15, 1872, they were married "June 12th at 116 East Fifth Street, by the Rev. A. N. Spahr."

Cause of Carroll's death: Angina Pectoris.

Carroll's obituary (believed to be from the NYTimes of April 5th, 1918) reads as follows:

MR. C.C.RAWLINGS, BANKER, IS DEAD; Was Vice President of the Union Trust Company and Also of the Bound Brook Trust Company. --
Mr. Carroll C. Rawlings, vice president of the Union Trust Company, died suddenly of heart disease yesterday morning in the home of his daughter, Mrs. James A. Laird, No. 150 North Twenty-first street, East Orange, N. J. He was in his sixty-fifth year.
Mr. Rawlings was born in Dupont, Ind., and after receiving a public school education became a telegraph operator. He then went to Cincinnati, where for several years he was a newspaper man. He came to this city about thirty years ago [about 1888, when he was 36] to become secretary to the president of the Union Trust Company and in the succeeding years gradually worked his way upward until he became its vice president. He was also vice president of the Bound Brook Trust Company of Bound Brook, N. J., where he lived in the summer.
Mr. Rawlings was a member of the Society of Colonial Wars, Sons of the American Revolution, and Indiana Society of New York. He leaves his wife and daughter.

Ida Elizabeth Walton

Ida's mother, Elizabeth Hoffman Walton, died at about age 32, in 1856, when daughter Ida was only 4 years old. Her father left the family to be raised by relatives, and moved alone to Baltimore, where by 1870 he was remarried and was reunited with some of his children, though not Ida.

Thus far, we have not been able to find Ida in the 1860 U.S. census, when she was age 8. She may be listed wherever her Aunt Catherine Willis's family was in 1860. (Check OH census; Willie was born there in 1852). By 1870, when she was 18, she appears in the Cincinnatti OH census, livng with her aunt Catherine's family, as follows (per 1870 U.S. census, Hamilton Co. OH, Cincinnatti 12th ward, page 30 (handwritten in upper left corner of left hand page; LDFS MF 552712), dwelling/family 113/225 (sharing a two-family dwelling with the Dee family):

Two years later, in 1872, she was married to Carroll Rawlings. Per the Cincinnatti Daily Gazette for Saturday, 15 June 1872, page (2?), Married: RAWLINGS-WALTON: June 13th, at 116 East Fifth street, by the Rev. A. N. Spahr, Carroll C. Rawlings and Miss Ida Walton".

Ida's cause of death per death certificate: Paralysis.

Bible says, "Ida Walton Rawlings, wife of Carroll Crary Rawlings, was born at Cumberland, Maryland on April 5th 1852. Her father, Alexander S. Walton, died in 1880. Her mother, Elizabeth Hoffman Walton, died in 1856.
