Jefferson County: Andrew Anderson Family

(This narrative combines information researched by June Anderson MacIntyre and Robert Scott. The birth dates for all of Andrew and Catherine Cuddie's children come from the Andrew Anderson Bible, which for many years was in the possession of Robert Ralston.)

Andrew Anderson was born in Bathgate, Linitgo, Scotland, according to his tombstone in Caledonia Presbyterian Church. He married Catherine Cuddle, who was born in Glasgow, on March 25, 1806 and came to America in 1813. This is from a family source. It is not yet known where they married. However, it appears they may have married in Pennsylvania, as their oldest child, William, was born in that state, according to the 1850 census. Their daughter Margaret, who married Thomas Ralston, was born in Pennsylvania in 1832, according to the 1860 census. The family moved to Indiana by the time James was born in 1838.

It seems likely the Andersons traveled in the company of the Alexander Harper family, which came to the Caledonia settlement in 1834 from Delaware County, Pa. In fact, a John Harper, probably Alexander’s brother, was in Delaware County in 1850 and was in Switzerland County by 1870. However, there is no known family connection between the Harpers and Andersons and it was possible they were both involved in textiles, as were many of the Scottish families.

Andrew died on 16 March 1848, according to the family Bible, and Catherine headed a household in Milton Township in 1850. After his death, Catherine married Daniel Miller on 3 Jan. 1856. Miller is also buried in Caledonia Cem. His first wife was Agnes Allen, who is buried in the Pleasant Cem. Daniel and Catherine were listed in Shelby Township, Jefferson County, in 1860. Catherine died on 8 Oct. 1868 according to the Bible.

Although Catherine and Andrew Anderson had 11 children, only four of them had heirs. Those four were listed in a deed dated 1 March 1923 in which Daniel’s children by his first marriage and Catherine’s heirs sold their interest in Daniel’s land to Austin Partin. And only two of these, William Anderson, who survived Catherine, but died before the deed executed, and Margaret, who m. Thomas Ralston, had any children.
The deed also reported that Daniel, who died intestate, had two daughters, Agnes, wife of John E. McMillan, and Jennet, wife of John Harper (son of Alexander).
