Jefferson County Records

Original marriage records may be obtained through the clerk's office at the Jefferson County Courthouse. They are located in the Genealogy Room, second floor. Copies are one dollar per page. Please, send a SASE with request. The marriage records have also been microfilmed and may be viewed at the Madison-Jefferson County Public Library. Original records should always be checked for verification, as the marriage database created by the Indiana State Library and the transcription on this web site are transcriptions and errors are bound to have occurred.

1851 - 1873. Jefferson County Marriage Records:

The following records were compiled by the John Paul Chapter of the D.A.R. They were typed by Mary Hill. In her forward, she explains why some dates are not the date of marriage, but the date that the license was issued by the clerk. Before 1832, marriage records were recorded as occuring on a particular date and by whom. But starting with the 1832 records, a license was issued by the clerk and a return was suppose to be made by the person who performed the marriage. In many cases the minister did not come to town and make the return. When this happened, only the clerk's license date would be recorded. If the record contains the clerk's name, then it is assumed to be the date of the license and not neccesarily that of the marriage.

There were several thousand marriages between 1851 - 1873. I would like to thank Vivian Shatley for helping with the 1868 - 1873 records, while I worked on the 1851 - 1868 records. I very much appreciate her help.

I am working on consolidating the 1851 - 1873 marriage records and dividing them alphabetically instead of by year. Please excuse the duplicates until I can reorganize these records. Note that many of the names are spelled phonetically, browsing through the names may be neccessary.
