Jefferson County: Liquor petition, 1824

Transcription by Bob W Scott.

When Jonathan Barrett applied for a tavern license his petition had a who's who of Madison society, or perhaps more accurately, a who would become who as many of these men were just starting their careers.

We the undersigned being freeholders of the County aforesaid do hereby certify that Jonathan Barrett who applied as above for license to keep a tavern is a person of good moral character and they are also of opinion that it would continue to the convenience and accommodation of travelers & others for said Barrett to be licensed as aforesaid
