Mrs. Eugenia Gray Claimed By Death In Louisville, Ky.
One of County's Oldest And Finest Ladies Succumbs In A Hospital There
Mrs. Nancy Eugenia Gray, 90, well known and respected lady of the Moorefield community, passed away at the St. Joseph Hospital, in Louisville, Ky., Thursday evening, January 31st. She sustained a broken hip in a fall at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Carl Culberston on December 31st and had been a patient in the hospital since that time.
She was born on March 7, 1855 in Jefferson county, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Culver Brooks. When a young girl she united with the Ebenezer M. E. church, to which faith she remained true during her life.
On December 24, 1878 she was married to Franklin Gray, with whom she lived in devotion and contentment until his death on March 2, 1944. A son Elbert, of Vevay, and three daughters, Mrs. Carl Culberston, near Vevay, Mrs. James Brougher, Connersville, Ind., and Mrs. Fay Hartman, of near Moorefield, are left to mourn the passing of a devoted mother.
With the children already mentioned she leaves a brother, Morton Brooks of Versailles and two sisters, Mrs. Eva Glockner of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Nettie Switzer of Mitchell, Ind. She also leaves fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at ten o'clock Sunday morning by Rev. H. W. Chatterton at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home and burial was made in the Vevay cemetery.
