Madison Associate Presbyterian church was a body whose members were largely of Scottish or Scotch-Irish origin. After the Associate Reformed Presbyterian presbytery merged with the Associate Presbyterian presbytery, it became a United Presbyterian Church congregation, as did most, but not all, of the members of the founding denominations. The 1859/1860 Madison directory shows this church at the south corner of Vine and First.
Presbytery records quoted in the Presbyterian Church of North America by William Melanchthon Glasgow show this body operated from 1818 through 1912. A 1920 of Jefferson County and Madison by the Madison’s women’s club reported that in 1836, the Rev. George Hall came to preach to a congregation of 13 families
No records are known to exist. However, the mortgage record books in the record's office show election of trustees and one list of members participating in an election. Listing trustees was routine. The membership list was not. The earliest mortgage book (before than mortgages were filed in deed books) was dated 1847/1849. Others were number No. 2, and No. 3. In the 1870s, such election results were filed in the Miscellaneous Record books, also in the recorder's office. To my knowledge, these have not been microfilmed and all are currently (September 2009) in frozen storage awaiting possible restoration following Jefferson County courthouse fire
