Milton Baptist Cemetery: Milton Township, Jefferson County.

Milton Baptist Church Cemetery

Transcribed by John Paul DAR in 1941 it was transcribed again with additional stones by Lee, Randall, and Lynn Rogers in the 1980s and by Robert Scott in 2007 and 2009. Collated by Robert W. Scott

Editor's Note: The Milton Baptist Church was located on the East Fork of the Indian Kentuck Creek in Milton Twp., roughly two miles north of Manville. It had two periods of operation: 1829-1836 and 1840 to 1883. Aaron and Sarah Hankins sold the trustees land for the church, containing 63 rods in the NW1/4 Section 11 Twp. 4N Range 11E. on Oct. 8, 1844. The trustees at the time were Henry Hall, Jonathan D. Hall and Joseph Hankins (Jefferson Co. Deed Book W p. 96.) Aaron and Sarah deeded the Hankins graveyard, .66 acre in the same section, for use as a church cemetery on March 18, 1871 (Jefferson Co. Deed Book 36 p. 380.)

Some additional burials have been clearly identified from funeral home records. Others are likely, but it’s clear that sometimes when Milton is listed, Milton Township in general was meant. I noted stone on these for those who had dates transcribed by the DAR or me. I have found some of the stones found by the DAR.

The DAR transcription has a note that the Turners were children of James & Martha Turner and that Martha Wilkins Turner was daughter of William Wilkins and wife, Ann Vernon. This note is in error. William A. Wilkins was married to Sarah A. Hankins.
