Family Bible Record of William and Eleanor McCasland

William McCasland filed a pension claim in Jefferson County for his service with the Pennsylvania Volunteers between 1777-1781. In his claim #W21790 there are two bible pages, one from when he was still living, and the other that his wife Eleanor submitted after his death.

The second record was recorded on the backside of the title page of The New Testament, Printed in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1795 by Mark and Charles Kerr, His Majesty's Printers.

The first submission includes the marriage date for William and Eleanor as March 30, 1781.

The pension claim states that Mr. King married them. A John King was preacher at Upper West Conococheague Presbyterian Church in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. William and Eleanor are listed in the membership rolls there.

From the pension claim, William states that the family lived in Augusta County, Virginia for 17 years, and Henry County, Kentucky for 7 years prior to moving to Hanover Township in Jefferson County. He purchased land near Hanover in 1813.

Susana and her husband Samuel Snodgrass moved to Jefferson County from Augusta County, Virginia. They are both buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery southwest of Greensburg.

James Harper McCasland married Jane Hood in Jefferson County on April 4, 1831. He and his family lived in Jefferson County until 1846. His mother moved with them to Morgan County and later to Sangamon County, Illinois. Eleanor McCasland is buried in Sangamon County, Illinois.

Lavina McCasland married John Duffy Jr. in Jefferson County on July 15, 1828. John provided a statement in the pension claim verifying William McCasland's death date. John and Lavina are buried in Shiloh Cemetery in Smyrna Township. Her name is spelled Lovena on her gravestone.

Phebe McCasland married John Bane (Bain) in Jefferson County February 16, 1832.

William D. McCasland married Mary G. Cochran in Jefferson County on April 24, 1824. He died in Madison in 1879.

Eleanor McCasland married Joseph English in Henry County, Kentucky. They are buried at Sand Creek Cemetery in Decatur County.

There appears to be a tendency among record keepers who recorded events for this family to spell McCasland as McCaslin or McCaslen.
