Ferguson, W Scott - Jefferson County - Spanish American War

My name is Golden Combs Ferguson. I am married to Larry Adams Ferguson. Larry was born in Dearborn County; and after being adopted, lived in Madison, Jefferson County; until going into the US Army.

Larry was adopted by William Crozier and Susan Napier Ferguson of Jefferson County, as a toddler. Larry and I have been married 44 years this past June.

When my husband went into the service, his father gave him a New Testament and Hyms (Army and Navy edition); and inscribed inside the back cover .. Given to Larry Ferguson By William C Ferguson / June 27, 1965. Larry was in the US Army July, 1965 - July, 1968.

Inside the front cover (right side), is inscribed "This book was carried thru the Spanish-American War by Sergt. W.S. Ferguson; Co.D.161 / Indiana Volunteers / 1898 - 1899 / a line is drawn; and inscription continues: Dale E Ferguson; son of W.S. Ferguson (sp) inlisted in First World but was rejected. Sent to Hospital for slight operation by Government. Just recovered when armistice was signed. Carried this book. Inside the front cover (left side), is inscribed 'Crozier Ferguson, son of W.S. Ferguson, World War II Veteran - 1942 - 1948 = Owner of Book."

Reading from the information posted in the 'Military' section, I would like to comment how ironic it was (almost a year later) after the Bible was given to Larry, he received orders; transferring him from Fort Campbell, Ky to Fort Stewart, Ga; and upon arrival at Fort Stewart; was sent on to Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Ga.

Our first born (born at Hunter Army Airfield), a son, William Parker Ferguson has been in the US Army for the past few years. We are now preparing to pass this treasure along to him; that he may hold onto it; and pass it on to his son, Alexander.

William Crozier Ferguson, b Mar 4 1903 passed away Oct 1981 in Mesa, Arizona. During the entire time we were around him, he never spoke of his family or siblings. I am sad to say that we both know very little about this man. With what few bits of information that I have been able to 'glean' from our memories and recollections ......

If anyone may have any 'bit' of information they could share about William Crozier Ferguson ... would surely appreciate it. I would like to post what little information I have here in the hopes that someone may have something to share.

The 161st Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry was formed of volunteer companies from Hammond, Mount Vernon, Shelbyville, Madison, Jeffersonville, Richmond, New Castle, Rushville, Monticello, Columbus, Michigan City and Lawrenceburg and was organized to help fill the quota of Indiana under the second call of the President for troops.

The regiment was rendezvoused at Camp Mount, where the physical examination of officers and men were held, and was mustered in by batallions, and on July 15 the regiment was all mustered into the volunteer service of the United States. The regiment remained at Camp Mount engaged in drill until August 11, when they were ordered to Jacksonville, Florida, where they arrived on August 14 and were assigned to the 7th Corps (Gen. Fitzhugh Lee). Moved from Jacksonville to Savannah, Georgia, October 23, and, under orders to proceed to Cuba, the regiment left Savannah for Havana, Cuba, on December 13 and arrived at Havana December 15. Went into camp at Camp Columbia, Mariana, Cuba, December 17, 1898. Under orders to prepare for muster-out the regiment left Camp Columbia March 29, 1899, and embarked for Savannah, Georgia, arriving there on March 31. Went into camp and was finally mustered out and discharged April 30, 1899, at Savannah.

The regiment proceeded via Washington, D.C., where they were reviewed by the authorities, and the companies which were from north of Indianapolis reached that city on the morning of May 3, where they were welcomed by Governor Mount who made them an address which was responded to by Col. Durbin, who took the occasion to deliver the colors of the regiment into the hands of the State authorities.
